Dog years and the Tet boundary
Dog years fall every twelve years:
- 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018
- Next: 2030
- After that: 2042
These numbers label lunar years; they are not exact date ranges. The Vietnamese calendar is lunisolar. It tracks the moon for its months and adds a leap month now and then to keep in line with the solar year, so Tet shifts within January and February. A birthday in early January 2018, for example, belongs to the Rooster year that began in 2017. If your birthday is in January or February, confirm the Tet date for that year on a Vietnamese lunar calendar before reading your sign or element.
For a January or February birthday, establish the animal year at the Tet boundary before using its year label to find the element.
The five Dog types by element
Each year carries the element of its heavenly stem, shown by the last digit of the zodiac year label label: 0 or 1 Metal, 2 or 3 Water, 4 or 5 Wood, 6 or 7 Fire, 8 or 9 Earth. “Gold Dog” in older English sources means Metal Dog. The Vietnamese Kim can be translated either way.
