Goat, Sheep or Ram: one sign, three names
The variation comes from translation. The word used for this sign in Chinese can refer to more than one horned, grazing animal, so English writers have chosen differently over the years. Whichever name you see, the years, the position in the cycle and the earthly branch, Mùi, are identical. A “Year of the Sheep” in one source and a “Year of the Goat” in another describe the same year.
Goat years and the Tet boundary
Goat years come every twelve years:
- 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015
- Next: 2027
- After that: 2039
Treat these as labels for lunar years. The Vietnamese calendar is lunisolar, following the moon for its months and adding a leap month when needed to keep step with the solar year. That is why Tet, and the start of each animal year, moves around within January and February. A baby born in early January 2027 will still be a Horse of the 2026 lunar year.
